This is a list of the basic items that you will need to welcome your new cat or kitten. You don't need to buy the most expensive items for your cat but you definitely need at least the following items to provide a welcoming environment for your new companion. I, myself, have purchased most of these items and do recommend them if you are a first-time cat owner:
1. Litter Box
A plastic litter box with no cover is ideal. Place the litter box in a space close to the cat so that he can learn where his dedicated litter box is.
2. Cat Litter
Finding the best cat litter to suit your needs and your cat's needs will take time and research. As a first-time cat owner, I found that this cat litter is effective but not perfect. Experimentation and time will help you find the best cat litter for your home.
3. Cat Litter Scoop
You can't forget this simple gadget. Stick with whatever your budget allows you to get as this is just a simple scoop. This scoop has fantastic reviews on Amazon with a 4.8 star rating.
4. Litter Mat
Your cat will kick litter out of its litter box from time to time. The best way to prevent that litter from spreading all over your floors is to get a litter mat.
5. Air Freshener
It may take you some time to adjust to the smell of a cat's litter box. Place an air freshener near it to keep the litter box area nice and fresh. Any air freshener will do but this is a classic one.
6. Hair Brush
Your cat will need to get brushed on a daily basis, if you can keep up with it. You need to buy a brush based on the length of your cat's hair.
To know the length of your cat's hair look at pictures of your cat or look at their parent's fur. Is it long or short?

7. Nail Clippers
Clipping your cat's nails seems a little daunting but it is not hard. Ideally there should be 2 of you to cut your cat's nails. It is a definite necessity to get nail clippers as the longer your cat's nails are the more their scratches will hurt.
These are amazing nail clippers. They are easy to use and small. Perfect for cat nails.
8. Cat Tree
Your cat needs a place to call his own, to scratch and sleep. Get a cat tree that can accommodate all of these needs.
9. Toys
Your cat will need to preoccupy themselves with toys while you are busy doing your own thing. The best toy is the plastic spring because your cat can play with it for hours.
10. Bowls
It's best to have plates and bowls designated for your cat. These bowls are perfect for kibble and water. Keep in mind, your cat will probably drink water from the tap.
11. Carrier
When you take your cat home for the first time you will need a carrier to take him home. This carrier will also come in handy in the future when you take your cat to the vet.
12. Dry Cat Food
I really recommend to visit your local pet store to find the best quality dry cat food for the best price. For my kitten, I bought the
Acana First Feast dry food.
13. Canned Wet Food
For wet food, I recommend the same. Ask your local pet store for their recommendations. I like purchasing cat food of different varieties for my cat.
These are all the basic items necessary to welcome your first cat into your home. I hope you really got inspiration from this post. Thank you and God bless!
